Sarah’s Health Notes: Berry berry good!
Important news for skin here. Thanks to Dr. Andrew Weil, the American doctor who pioneered integrated medicine, for his tip that eating berries can help prevent wrinkles. The pink, red and purple berry family has long been known to be hugely health supportive due to the polyphenols they contain, as well as vitamin C and fibre.
Polyphenols are powerful antioxidants, which can prevent or reverse damage in your cells caused by ageing, the environment and lifestyle. That damage is linked to many chronic diseases. Research shows that polyphenol-rich diets can help reduce your risk of those diseases. So berries are indisputably good for your general health.
But there’s another bonus to eating berries, as Dr. Weil (whose Mail on Sunday column I used to edit) points out. Berries, especially raspberries, strawberries and cranberries (as well as vegetables and nuts), contain ellagic acid, an antioxidant which has been shown to help prevent the breakdown of collagen – which gives skin firmness and bounce - and also quell inflammation.
Dr. Weil, who created the Mega-Mushroom skincare range for Origins, says the research points to the potential of berries being beneficial used in topical skincare. But meanwhile, he recommends eating berries regularly as ‘one of the best, not to mention tastiest, moves you can make for overall health’.
However, he recommends seeking out organically grown fruit, if possible, as berries commonly find a place in the ‘Dirty Dozen’ of sprayed produce. Organic frozen berries are a great alternative, he says.
