Beauty Bible’s Life Notes: Waitrose cork recycling scheme
Sometimes, as we continue on our merry way through life, we come across things that aren’t really beauty, aren’t wellbeing, aren’t spa reviews – but just make life a little better, in random some way. So, welcome to an occasional feature where we’ll be sharing a scheme, a place, a list of books, perhaps some wisdom or other that we think you’ll want to know about.
And so… to corks! Many of you will be popping them this festive season, but what to do after that? We recycle bottles… Screw-top aluminium lids, cans… but what about those corks? Well, Waitrose has the answer: they’ve brought in a Cork Recycling Scheme.
It's only in seven stores so far… but if the scheme is a success, no doubt they’ll roll it out. Recycling is something we really care about, take time to do… So, if you’re near any of the following stores, help get this scheme up and running…
• Salisbury
• Saltash
• Lymington
• Bath
• Godalming
• Truro
• Maidenhead
As a spokeserson for the store explains, ‘Waitrose customers get through a corking nearly 25 million natural corks a year. Currently this valuable material does not have its own waste stream which means it ends up in landfill. Cork is a durable material and has the potential to be repurposed into a variety of products after it has been used as a wine cork. This trial is a fantastic way for us to reduce waste and play a part in improving our sustainability as a category. Once we’ve gauged our customer’s appetite to return their natural corks, we’re hoping to roll the trial out to further stores from next year.’
How will the ‘rescued’ cork be used? Apparently, recycled natural cork can be repurposed into countless new applications, for instance a mulch to boost soil health, or upcycled into placemats, coasters, flooring – even shoes.
Note to every other supermarket: you could/should ALL be doing this…
Chin, chin!
