Westman Atelier make-up
We first got to know A-list make-up artist Gucci Westman (above) when she was the resident professional at Lancôme. But it comes as no surprise that she’s now launched her own signature line, infusing her passion for skincare – because great make-up always starts with great skin – into a capsule collection of (thus far) stick foundation, blusher, couture and highlighter, together with a powder bronzer.
For a luxury make-up line, Westman Atelier (just launched exclusively at net-a-porter.com) is actually very ‘clean’ – ‘we take a plants-first approach,’ Gucci explains. So: no animal-derived ingredients (and certainly no animal testing), no coal tar, no chemical filters, parabens, phthalates, GMOs, retinol or retinol, synthetic fragrances. Vegan, too.
That’s not to say it’s entirely natural, but what Gucci does promise is that where synthetic ingredients are used (to ensure products last on the skin, mostly), they’re encapsulated by ‘cleaner’ ingredients so they don’t touch the complexion itself. She calls the range ‘consciously crafted’, and it’s rare to see a make-up line that’s this luxurious which is created with those sensibilities in mind.
New lines will be added little by little (and we look forward hugely to lipsticks and mascara, in particular), but we’re already impressed by the debut products, which just landed exclusively at Selfridges. (Clever them.) What can we report? Velvety textures, great colour pay-off, radiant and healthy-looking skin.
We acknowledge: Westman Atelier sure ain’t cheap. And although it’s available online, we definitely recommend heading to the counter to be colour-matched, because at £62 for a foundation (pictured below), you definitely don’t want to get your shade wrong. (Probably our favourite product, meanwhile, is Baby Cheeks blush – an incredibly easy-to-blend flush in Petal, a dusty nude rose.)
One thing we know: it’s a while since a new make-up artist line landed on our desks – and with the hands-on knowledge that women like Gucci Westman bring to product creation, that’s something that always gets our hearts beating a little faster. We recommend: head Selfridges-wards, if you possibly can, and find out what all the buzz is about.
