On of the first hot day some years ago, I ventured out about in London in sandals with bare feet. By the time I'd walked 10 minutes to an appointment, my heels were giving me such grief I had to flop into a taxi. The blisters were sooo painful that on the way back – in another cab (this was getting expensive!) – I stopped at Boots in New Oxford Street, threw off my shoes and made for the nearest chair.
