7 Secrets of Beauty & Wellbeing: Catarina de Avillez, founder of The Natural Africa

We reckon you’ve probably learned about The Natural Africa by now, on Beauty Bible. They’ve scooped Beauty Bible wins, and Sarah and Jo are both recent converts to the newest product, Kalahari Melon Seed Oil. The brand is founded by Andrew Franks and Catarina de Avillez (she’s pictured above), referencing their African roots; together, they’ve created a brand which focuses on sustainably sourced indigenous medicinal plants from that continent.

We are always fascinated to hear how busy beauty names integrate their different roles, and stay balanced – so we asked Catarina to share her ‘7 Secrets’. We loved reading them – and we think you will, too.

Stress is my biggest challenge. Running a business means constant decision-making, long hours, and the occasional sleepless night. To keep burnout at bay, I make movement a priority — Heartcore Pilates is my go-to for both body and mind. I’ve also learned the power of boundaries and always carve out time for mindfulness, even if it’s just five deep breaths between meetings. Small but mighty habits keep me feeling balanced.

Hydration is everything for my skin. I have sensitive skin, so keeping it calm and well-moisturised is a top priority. When I’m stressed or tired, it shows — dullness, dehydration, and a lack of glow. So, I take a two-pronged approach: internally, I drink plenty of water, herbal teas, and take collagen supplements for deep nourishment. Externally, I focus on hydrating serums, facial oils, and daily SPF. I love our Resurrection Moisturiser as it helps to lock in moisture for 12 hours. A good face mask is my instant refresh when my skin needs a boost.

Authenticity is the quality I admire most in others. There’s something magnetic about people who are real, kind, and unapologetically themselves. In myself, I value resilience. Life — and business — can be unpredictable, but staying grounded, adaptable, and true to myself is something I take pride in.

My mother is my ultimate role model. She has always been my greatest source of wisdom and strength, showing me that success isn’t just about pushing forward — it’s also about knowing when to pause, take care of yourself, and set healthy boundaries. She embodies ambition with grace, and that balance inspires me every day.

Supplements are an essential part of my routine. My non-negotiables are collagen for skin and joints, magnesium to help with sleep and stress, and Athletic Greens AG1 for a daily nutrient boost. It’s packed with vitamins, minerals, probiotics, and adaptogens — perfect for busy days when I need to stay on top of my health without overcomplicating things.

Travel sparks my creativity. There’s nothing like stepping into a new culture, meeting different people, and experiencing fresh perspectives to shift my mindset. I also love a good book or podcast, especially those that challenge my thinking, whether on business, wellness, or personal growth.

Unplugging is a conscious effort. I create “no work” moments where my phone goes on airplane mode, I light a candle, and either lose myself in a book, indulge in skincare, or unwind with a great movie or series. Being in nature — long walks, fresh air — is another essential reset button for me.

A solid wind-down routine is everything. I take magnesium in the evening, dim the lights an hour before bed, and stay off my phone. Essential oils work wonders, and I love drifting off to a podcast or audiobook. Honestly, sleep is the best beauty trick out there — so I treat it like gold!
