Beauty Bible Loves... Philip B. Maui Wowie Volumizing Mousse
Mousse is having a comeback. THANK GOD! Root lift sprays and spritz-on stylers are all very well, but after a few consecutive uses with the same product, we often find hair becoming dessicated, due to super-high levels of alcohol. For many hairtypes, mousse is the longest-lasting way to get some extra body and style in your hair… but they’ve had to shake off a reputation for being crunchy-making and stiff.
Well, this one most definitely isn’t (and we’d have expected nothing less from Philip B., the A-list, California-based hairdresser who we’ve quoted too many times in Beauty Bible books to keep track of. (Why? Because he’s just brilliant at hair health advice.)
First off, we like the fact that Philip B. Maui Wowie Volumizing Mousse doesn’t come in a metal aerosol (still a nightmare to recycled), but in a pump action bottle that aerates the foam when you press the nozzle.
Secondly, the bounce! Impressive, without being too ‘zhooshed’. But at the same time, hair is smooth and still quite soft – not an iota of crunchiness.
Thirdly, the volume lasts. We reckon this may be down to the fact that there’s a bit of sea salt in there, which – while not giving the usual ‘beach hair’ finish – definitely maintains some texture beyond a couple of days. (If you’re lucky enough to be able to stretch out a blow-dry out for that long.)
Fourth: the scent. Tropical, with touches of coconut and gardenia (think tropical holidays, not Bounty bars).
So, very much NOT cheap, but a couple of pumps are all that it takes on mid-length hair.
