Beauty Bible Loves... MILK Make-up autumn collection

We know what you’re thinking. Have we gone stark, staring mad? Some of the colours here are definitely bold enough to scare a horse or two, and the shimmer factor of others appears, at first glance, as if it it would be more at home on the dancefloor at Studio 54 than in the make-up bags of two veteran beauty editors.

But hang in there. Because after we sat through a tutorial with Milk;s Director of Artistry, Sara Wren, we had a play and realised: these work at any age. So, keep the faith while we lead you by the hand through the collection.

Milk Makeup Hydro Grip & Glo/£24. This gel primer looks as if it’s almost solid gold in the pump –but rather than make you look like Shirley Eaton daubed in gold in James Bond’s Goldfinger (which was rather what we were expecting), it melts into skin leaving a flattering radiance that looks just great under foundation – not sparkly at all, simply lit from within. And as the name suggests (and we quote), this ‘three-in-one illuminator + primer + skincare hybrid’ also has a grippy texture (this hasn’t become a cult product by accident), so anything you apply over the top just hangs in there for impressively longer.

Milk Makeup Odyssey Lip Oil Gloss/£24. Jo’s photo doesn’t do the glimmer and shimmer in these formulations justice. Again, at first glance, they look TERRIFYING. But on lips, they have the effect of creating the optical illusion of fullness. Wear alone, or use them to morph the look of a favourite lipstick, adding a touch of silver, gold or deep bronze-y red. The moral being: don’t judge a lip product by its colour in the tube! And what’s more, these are ‘oil glosses’ – so they’re mega-conditioning, as well as fun. And NB, if the following don’t push your buttons, there are now 12 shades in Odyssey Lip Oil Gloss, in all (these are range extensions).

Adventure looks like glittery mauve in the tube, but in reality adds a glossy, very slightly silvery glaze to lips (or over lipstick) – particularly good for cooler skintones.

Day Trip is a deep golden brown (they refer to it as ‘warm toffee’) – again, blends out to look very natural and very flattering.

Experience is probably the most ‘lip-coloured’, adding a gleaming gold finish which you can easily ‘dilute’ with a finger merely to add a kiss of extra shimmery sheen to lips (or again, over lipstick; this would actually be great over a deep burgundy or wine).

Milk Makeup Cooling Water Jelly Tint. Again, SCARY COLOURS. A bright-bright coral, an eye-popping pink. And yet… when you sweep them onto cheeks, you get a sheer, cooling wash of colour (it contains hydrating seawater and aloe’), with a super-natural result. Great on bare skin, also over foundation. Milk promise a pretty staggering 1000+ swipes before this runs out. (And for the spot-prone, it’s non-pore-blocking and non-acnegenic.)

The moral of the story being: don’t judge a book by its cover. And certainly, don’t judge make-up colours on the basis of what they look like in the tube, any more…
