Faîr Parfum Dawn Rose

If you’re a rose-lover, you may have to be just a tiny bit patient while you wait for this to unfold on your skin... Spritz on Dawn Rose eau de parfum and the first waft is the aromatic, citrusy tang of Honey Pomelo. Then…then! The first streaks of roseate dawn steal across your olfactory senses, just like watching the sun rise out of the night sky.

This is no soft, pale pink rosé, vanishing in an evanescent cloud. It’s more of a sassy, sensual, sparkling cocktail of a fragrance, with heart notes of clove and vetiver under the rose and pomelo, the whole underpinned with patchouli and suede. And it’s designed to linger from dawn to darkness.

Sarah tried it with a group of friends on a warm summer’s evening in the Suffolk countryside, sitting on a bank after walking through knee high grasses and flowers, listening to birds chirruping and bees buzzing. It was voted ‘pretty perfect’ by both the women testers and the male sniffers. (And yes, we did carry the Faîr tester phials with us on the walk – it’s called investigative journalism…. Well, sort of!)

Now, one thing we hadn’t quite clocked until we read the amazing set of customer reviews online – 42 reviews, all of them five-star – which underlined just how much the reviewers love Faîr Parfum’s ethical stance. The ingredients are natural and sustainable, based on sophisticated blends of essential oils (which one grateful reviewer reported did not irritate her inflammatory skin condition). The brand has zero tolerance for animal testing. Packaging is recyclable.

Faîr is much more than just a word for this idealistic and romantic perfume house. The business is built on fairness, says Phillipe Charrier, grandson of the original founder Francis Charrier, who fell into perfumery as the result of a forbidden romance.  In 1884, disowned by his aristocratic father for marrying a Russian circus dancer, Francis put bread on the table as a farm labourer. Extraordinarily he combined this with an ultimately successful evening job with a perfumer. In 1888, Faîr Parfum was launched, with Francis not just passionate about creating beautiful scents but also workers’ rights – paying faîr wages for fewer hours - and also protecting traditional perfumery skills.
