The sniff test is still the best way to tell if any make-up product is past its prime; if you get a hint of anything 'off' in a lipstick or creamy product (such as foundation), throw it out. And whatever you do, don't stockpile mascara: have one (maximum two) on the go at any one time, and replace it every three months.
