Sarah's Health Notes: Get in training to walk the MoonWalk
We’re doffing our hats - and donning our trainers – to support Nina Barough CBE, Founder and Chief Executive of health charity Walk The Walk. Launched almost 30 years ago, Walk The Walk organises the famous MoonWalk fundraising events in London, Edinburgh and Iceland which have raised more than £143 million so far for cancer prevention, research and integrated care - scroll down for details of 2025 events.
The charity aims to raise money but also awareness with some pretty eye-catching outfits and make-up, as you can see above. Importantly, Walk The Walk also campaigns to raise awareness that men can get breast cancer too (one of my closest men friends was diagnosed with it to his shock).
Jo and I are dedicated walkers. We’ve stepped out over nearly three decades of Beauty Bible, through every season, battling winds that blew the froth off our cappuccinos (that became a BB saying…) and pelting rain, to blissful sun on our backs. We’ve spotted the lime green rosettes of leaves that presage Spring and seen the bare tracery of winter. One of our top tips is to invest in a good backpack – even laptops seem lighter when the weight is evenly distributed across your body.
Walking is great exercise for everyone, whether you stroll or trot, go for a short or long distance, in country or town, with or without a four-legged friend. Whether you’re happy, chatting with a friend or rambling with a group, or sad just putting one foot in front of another really truly helps. As public health expert Prof. Nick Cavill says: ‘Walking for half an hour a day is associated with improvements in over 20 health conditions, from reducing the risk of heart disease and some cancers to improving mental health and wellbeing.’
If you’ve lost the habit of a daily walk – or just need a nudge - Nina has some simple practical tips:
Put walks in your diary. Having a routine makes it easier to turn going for a walk into a habit – and consider having a walking buddy or joining The Ramblers. Pick a time of day that suits you best and add it into your diary as an appointment. At work, instigate walking meetings in a nearby green space or by a river. When you’re on the phone, march up and down on the spot or walk round your office.
Plan several routes at different distances. Whether you have time for a quick 10-minute walk or a longer session, having several routes planned makes it simple to fit in.
Have suitable comfy clothing and shoes for all weathers. Never let the weather stop you walking. You know the saying: ‘There’s no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing’.
Invest in a tracking device or app. Recording your steps and distance each day can be really motivating.
Every step counts! Whether you’re walking a mile, or the distance from your desk to the kettle – engage your core, relax your shoulders and float the crown of your head up to the sky (or ceiling).
