Calming chamomile ritual
Chamomile really comes into its own at this time of year, for its renowned sedative powers. It's been used for centuries to treat insomnia and anxiety, so if the prospect of a frantic holiday season is stressing you out (and you are sooooo not alone), you might want to try ritual based around Roman chamomile, chosen for its calming, slightly narcotic qualities. (This wonderful, calming herb also soothes tight muscles and works to relieve tension.) Step 1 Fill a small (1 oz/30 ml) bottle half-way with evening primrose oil.
Step 2 Add 4 drops of rose otto essential oil, 3 drops of lavender, 3 drops of Roman chamomile and 2 drops of bergamot essential oil.
Step 3 Fill the rest of the bottle with evening primrose oil, put the stopper in (or the lid on), and shake well again.
Step 4 Pour two to three capfuls of the oil into warm-to-hot water (go for your perfect 'relax' temperature: too piping hot can be counter-productive). Swish the water, to disperse the oil perfectly.
Step 5 Add three or four chamomile teabags to the bath, and swish them in the water.
Step 6 Dim the lights and/or light a candle (following yesterday's sage wisdom about safety), and soak in the tub for 20-25 minutes, topping up with hot water. Squeeze the teabags and place two of them over your eyes, while you relax.
Step 7 Use slow breathing to calm yourself. Inhale, breathe deep into the abdomen to the count of eight, hold for two counts, and exhale for eight counts. At the bottom of the exhale, hold for two breaths and repeat from the beginning of the exercise.
Think of it as your lullaby to dreamland.
