Bobbi Brown Intensive Serum Foundation SPF40

There are going to be some happy women out there – because this superb foundation from Bobbi Brown has reappeared in the range, and it's better than ever. (And that's saying something.) Sure enough, the reviews for this have titles like 'Best Foundatioin I've Ever Owned!' and 'Thank Goodness'!

We became reacquainted with it last week at a Bobbi Brown open morning to meet their Bobbi Brown Pro Artist team – and it was make-up wizard Lampros Faslis who worked his magic with this on Jo's face.

It has a wonderfully silky, serum texture which glides onto skin and is super-friendly to mature complexions. (There are actually skincare ingredients in there, in the form of cordyceps mushroom and Argirelene peptides to fight signs of ageing which give a bit of help but – like the SPF40 – shouldn't be relied on because no foundation should ever be applied all over your face. Just where needed.)

It offers really great coverage without looking obvious at all and a little goes a long way (which is important, because this is at the upper end of the foundation price scale). The finish is radiant, but not too shiny. Lampros applied Bobbi Brown Intensive Serum Foundation SPF40 with a soft natural bristle foundation brush, but at home we're getting great results from a synthetic foundation brush.

What's really important, though, is to find your perfect shade – which we recommend you do via a Bobbi Brown counter, because there are 23 shades spanning the very palest to ultra-deep, and it's worth the time investment to get this right. (But frankly, Bobbi Brown counters are places we're always happy to visit, and never leave feeling less-than-chipper.) The shade chart is below (with Jo’s Beige-42 circled.)

In its earlier incarnation, this was dispensed via a dropper bottle. And it was a tad messy. Now there's a way more practical pump – but as the icing on the cake, the sleek black bottle is almost dressing table-worthy, actually. Which isn't something you can often say about a foundation.
