Q. I like to use dry shampoo occasionally – well quite often really! – when I am in a hurry but some of the ingredients in mainstream ones put me off. Are there any natural dry shampoos you know of? A. This is a growing market as time-poor women realise the benefits of these spritz-massage-‘n’-brush products for reviving and refreshing hair in a few minutes compared to up to an hour washing, drying and styling. As well as using dry shampoo when her hair needs a wash, Jo finds it a boon for adding volume to limp locks.

However, as you say, there may be ingredients you might prefer not to spray around you and leave on your scalp. One bestseller we found online sounded as if it was more like lighter fuel, with the top ingredients listed as butane, isobutene, alcohol denat, and propane in the top five by quantity. (The likely reason for these ingredients is to fire the product from the canister, and the alcohol helps bind ingredients so they don't separate when dispensed.) There are now several natural products on the market including Tints of Nature Dry Shampoo, £12.95, which contains 99.5 per cent natural and organic ingredients, and no talc, which tends to leave a chalky residue. It’s based on tapioca, potato and corn starches, which absorb oil and reduce greasiness as well as softening and conditioning your mop, plus organic rice silk to improve manageability and smoothness. Organic hectorite clay absorbs moisture.

Rahua Voluminous Dry Shampoo, £30 for 51 g from naturisimo.com, ticks every eco-friendly box. The refreshing lifting formula is 100 per cent natural, gluten-free, vegan with organic ingredients and the recyclable, eco-squeeze dispenser is aerosol-free. Key ingredients include food grade cassava starch, cosmetic clay and star anise. It’s suitable for all hair types and colours.

French plant-based brand Klorane, offer Gentle Dry Shampoo with Oat Milk. However, the 150ml version is in an aerosol pump (see above) so look for the 50 ml gas-free non-aerosol pump, £4 for 50 ml.

Finally, keep an eye out in November when haircare expert Aveda launch Shampure Dry Shampoo, a 99.8 per cent naturally-derived, non-aerosol powder mist.
