Beauty Clinic: Husband with a flaky scalp

Q. My husband has a long-term problem with flaky scalp. He uses a good shampoo (mine…), no conditioner – and it doesn't fall like dandruff snow on his shoulders. Can you suggest something? A. According to pharmacist Shabir Daya, underlying inflammation is the usual cause of dry flaky scalp although this can sometimes be associated with fungi that live on the scalp

Botanical ShampooHe suggests trying Botanical Shampoo, which can also be used as a body wash. This extra mild, moisturising shampoo contains a blend of oils together with herbal extracts to soothe the scalp. It also contains natural anti-bacterial and anti-fungal ingredients, which make it ideal for inflammatory scalp disorders, including dandruff.

Barefoot Botanical ShampooAnother option, advises Shabir, ‘is to consider the use of Barefoot Botanicals SOS Dry Scalp Shampoo. This contains aloe vera and other soothing herbs and also tea tree for its antimicrobial properties.’ This has been specially formulated as a remedy for common hair and scalp problems, particularly itchy, flaky or sensitive scalps with plant extracts, vitamins and essential oils, including tea tree, lavender, rosemary and geranium. It is also suitable for anyone with eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis or dandruff.

Lastly, we were given a tip by a leading French hair care brand that massaging a dry itchy scalp with a very few drops of natural oil, such as almond (available from health food shops), helps to restore the scalp.
