VOCĀ

We remember when the phrase ‘aromacology’ was first coined. (Yes, we’ve been around that long.) It’s basically the idea that smells can shift our mindset in different ways – sort of ‘aromatherapy-plus’.

So, this glorious new range, VOCĀ, has been formulated in particular to help with sleep issues (and we honestly don’t know anyone who doesn’t suffer from those – even more so, after the upheaval of the last few years). And when something crosses our desk that has links to Danièle Ryman – a pioneer in ‘osmology’, the connection between the sense of smell and our emotions – we absolutely sit up and take notice.

VOCĀ, we are told, ‘was born from our desire to encourage all of us to reappraise our relationships with sleep and improve our wellbeing… one sleep at a time.’ And we’re all for that.

There are three different fragrances available, each combining up to 15 high-quality (often organic), ethically-sourced botanicals. And each designed to tackle a different aspect of sleep challenges…

Mediterranean Moon (above) – fresh, delicate, citrusy, this has been blended ‘to alleviate your worries and restore feelings of positivity and wellbeing’, via elements of bergamot (nerve-settling), helichrysum (cherished by the Greeks for its healing powers), and rose absolute (to reduce tension).

Oriental Lullaby (below) – exotic, opulent and sumptuous, drawing on ingredients from the East davana, grounding patchouli and sandalwood, which has been used in Buddhist temples for centuries, maybe millennia, to aid meditation.

Dreams of Africa – taking 11 botanicals that have been used in traditional African medicine for their calming powers, including frankincense (for anxiety), blue tansy (to ease stress) and neroli (for nervous tension); this happens to be Jo’s fave from the three.

The three creations are available in three options: Pillow Spray/£36 for 50ml, Diffuser Elixir/£45 for 15ml (to be used with your favourite aromatherapy diffuser), and Roller Ball/£36 for 10ml. The idea is to create a ritual with one or more of them that in time, has an almost Pavolovian effect, nudging you sleepwards.

We’re looking longingly at our beds, while writing this… To sleep, perchance to enjoy fragrant dreams.
