Refills are the way forward. We are hugely encouraged how many brands are shifting their thinking to make it easier NOT to throw away componentry and packaging, and this Hourglass palette is a shining example of how glam can meet eco – and live happily ever after.

Hourglass has gone from cult brand to icon, basically. We love to explore the counter in Liberty for an up-close-and-personal shopping experience, a bit of dipping and dabbing – which is where we encountered these so-smooth shadows in person.

With great colour pay-off, Hourglass Curator Eyeshadows come as individual powder shadow pods that click in and out of the sleek gold compact, allowing you to custom-create a line-up from a range of 40 shades (scroll-down). The palettes themselves are available in three- and five-shadow options, but we rarely use more than three – a highlighter, a darker shade for the lash area and socket, and a mid-tone for seamlessly blending – so that’s what we’re featuring here (see above).

What you can do is pick your fave textures, though: Matte (we’d go for that for our two deeper shades), Satin (a creamy, luminous finish), Shimmer (pearlescent) and Metallic (if you must – or you’re 20; definitely only for the smoother bits of skin).
