Seven Secrets of Wellbeing: MV Skincare's Sharon McGlinchey

Sharon McGlinchey, British-born but longtime resident of Sydney, came into our lives some years ago when she invited Sarah for a facial on one of her trips to London. Well, Sarah was simply blown away by her knowledge, passion and her amazing skincare. In a nutshell, Sharon was working as a beauty therapist some two decades ago but never found products to use on her clients that really matched her very exacting requirements. So, being a can do sort of person, she set about creating her own capsule collection of purely natural skincare, overseeing every step – which she still does today. If Sarah was on a desert island, MV Organic Skincare would be her luxury – except it’s really a must have. And there’s a stellar line up of other reported devotees, including Maggie Gyllenhaal, Emma Watson, Rosie Huntingdon-Whiteley, Melissa George and Alicia Keys.

Sharon’s latest launch is Relaxing Body Oil, £46 for 120 ml, which is perfect for summer. Massage it into damp skin and feel your body slurp it up, while your mind floats off somewhere lovely on the wafts of camellia, lavender and sandalwood.

Before you race off to order MV Organic Skincare Relaxing Body Oil, spend a few minutes with a cup or glass of something nice reading Sharon’s secrets of wellbeing.

Go with what feels right. Not what you’re told is right. Don’t get fooled by the fads. So much information flies around all the time, promising the secret to everlasting youth/immediate weight loss/superhuman health, only to be disproved a year later. The only way to live well and feel well is simple – listen to your body. If you really want that delicious slice of homemade cinnamon-y carrot cake with a great coffee – enjoy it! Enjoyment feeds our soul and, in turn, our health. Take care of yourself, don’t be strict, don’t sweat the small stuff and make decisions - from what you eat to what you put on your skin -that feel instinctively good for you.

Laugh as much as you can. I’ve not had the easiest ride in life but I’ve been blessed with the sort of childlike heart that finds pleasure in the simplest stuff. I’m very good at laughing things off. Too many people get bogged down in the details. So look up, step back, count your blessings and keep your glorious girlfriends close by, for regular catch-ups and proper belly laughs. Failing that, put on a favourite funny movie or sitcom – a good laughing session doesn’t just make you feel wonderful, all that oxygen pumping round is great for your body and your skin too.

Press pause, even for a few minutes. When I created the MV 3 Minute Ritual, I was juggling a baby, a skincare business and lots of facial clients, and yes, I was deeply, completely burnt out. When your health gets a real knock, it’s a powerful reminder – you either resolve never to let things get to that point again, or you just keep pushing until you reach that point of no return. Thankfully, I listened – and realised that even when life is at its busiest, it’s crucial to create those moments when you can catch your breath again. When you stand at the sink, looking at your face in the mirror, we’re talking about just three minutes, of touch, breath, connection… it slows your heart rate, oxygenates your body, nourishes your skin, and soothes every sense. It’s simple, but so powerful. (Sharon’s 3 minute ritual is one of Sarah’s favourite skincare routines: with The Gentle Cream Cleanser, from £25.50 for 70ml, Rose Protective and Soothing Moisturiser, from £25 for 15ml, and Rose Plus Booster, £72 for 35ml.)

Enjoy a little bit of the very best. People always remark on how few ingredients we use within our MV Organic Skincare products. We talk about ‘the art of simplicity’ at MV – because a product like our Pure Jojoba, £29 for 35 ml, which is simply the purest, highest-grade, organic jojoba oil, works little miracles – without anything else added or needed. Skin adores it: it balances sebum, cleanses eye make-up better than anything else out there, and protects against the drying effects of hard water (press a few drops into damp, cleansed skin before your shower, to protect against dehydration). I travel with it too – rubbing it inside the nostrils keeps the mucous membranes moist, which prevents a sore, dry, irritated nose (it also stopped the nosebleeds I used to get on the 26 hour flight from Oz to the UK!). I apply the same principle to everything else– a little bit of rich dark chocolate, a beautiful organic handmade tea, and a single pair of handmade brogues …

Be kind. It’s probably my Northern upbringing, but I’ve never had any airs or graces. I love connecting with people in the most down to earth way - over shared love of a pickled egg perhaps... If you put yourself out there in a kind and authentic way, you’ll create a real, human connection with anyone. I make a point of thanking people from the heart, and expressing gratitude at every little thing – a beautiful rose, a smile from a stranger, a great cup of coffee. And we know now how much mindfulness and gratitude can positively impact our wellbeing.

Keep on learning. My gorgeous daughter Tess is in her early 20s and the source of so much fun and continual learning curves. I love surrounding myself with people who are curious about life and hungry to learn, experience and grow. I left home when I was a teenager, flying off to Australia alone, and that appetite for adventure has never left me. Enriching conversations with brilliant people fire me up. I get a lot of my happy energy still from being enthusiastic about learning as much as I can.

Embrace yourself, for everything you are. I really worry about young girls with perfect skin who follow those make-up tutorials where they literally paint themselves with concealer, all over, and then foundation, all over, and then paint some other face on top of their own beautiful, natural face – chiseling in cheekbones, brows, lips, then adding tons of lashes… and this is a daily process!

WHY? What do they think when they see their natural faces in the mirror? One of the most important elements of our wellbeing comes from healthy, unconditional self-acceptance. From loving you, as you are – not covered up, concealed, made up, masked.

I’ve hardly ever worn make-up – maybe a bit of lipstick or mascara every now and then (I love Kjaer Weis!) – but I want to know that the world is seeing me, for me – not for my make-up.

I’d love every young girl to feel confident enough to go out without a scrap of make-up, just a big smile, and beaming confidence. That’s the true embodiment of wellbeing to me – a woman who is happy and content on the inside, so you see it glowing out of her… just beautiful.
